9. HR-005 - Tinovul Luci Centru

Location: The delimited peatland area, proposed for rehabilitation within the present project, called Tinovul Luci is located in the southwest of Harghita County, in the center of Harghita Mountains, belonging to the territorial administration of Sâncrăieni Commune. This bog is at an altitude of 1087 m, with GPS coordinates latitude (N) 46 º 17 ʹ 46.78 ”and longitude (E) 25 º 43 ʹ 21.35”, and an extended area. The territory on which the rehabilitation works are intended is 80.9 ha. The peat bog is owned by the Sâncrăieni Composerate. HR-005 Tinovul Lucii is an integral part of the site of community interest ROSCI0246 Tinovul Luci, and of the nature reserve of national interest RONPA0482 Tinovul Luci.

Conservation status: The main habitat type is 91D0 * Peatlands with forest vegetation, and the secondary one 7140 - Transitional peat bogs. The conservation status of the main habitat 91D0 is threatened by pressure I02 Native species, problematic indigenous, lipid spruce being accentuated in some places on the eastern side of the site. In these places, the outbreak of Ipide significantly affected Pinus sylvestris species, causing the trees to dry out. Following wind gusts and ice and snow ruptures (caused in January-February 2019) many of the dry and healthy trees of Scots pine and spruce were felled / broken. Taking into account these phenomena, we consider that the conservation status of the 91D0 habitat from the point of view of its specific structure and functions must be assessed unfavorably - inadequately. The secondary habitat occupies a very small space from the actual surface only at the northern end of the area and its favorable conservation status is considered as for which it does not require rehabilitation interventions.

Identified pressures and threats: During the field inspections, the current pressures were identified, but also those that will threaten the habitats in the future. In addition to those identified in the restoration schemes in the PeatRO program, we also identified other disruptive factors, pressures and threats:

  • inadequate water regime for habitat 91D0. It requires damming through the intervention of sub activity 3.3;
  • cumulating the amount of biomass by decomposing woody vegetation. Wild pine droughts have been identified (in large quantities) caused by excessive foci of lipids, and snowfalls. In the first phase, a documentary study will be requested to analyze these damages and to express appropriate solutions for extracting the volume of dead wood / reducing or predicting the listed damages. This study will be developed through sub-activity A.1.5;
  • several patches with damage from the lipid focus have been identified, which require the location of pheromone traps involving sub activity 5.3;
  • inadequate / uncontrolled tourism. It requires the realization of a thematic route (sub-activity A.8.1), through which the uncontrolled entry of tourists in the most valuable areas of the peat bog can be eliminated, minimizing the impact by trampling of the characteristic plants.
